Goals Update #3

So it's the end of the year, and I remembered I had some goals for 2013, which I posted about before.

Here's my final update for this year's goals.

01. Make 100 unique necklaces

02. Start up an etsy store to sell said necklaces!

Scheduled posts have been a life-saver for months!

...what were the blogging trends this year, anyway? (This is a genuine question)

 

06. Likewise don’t feel pressured to create ‘seasonal’ crafts/posts (Halloween crafts at Easter? Why not!)

No pressure felt. (Nor motivation)

 

07. Get a hair cut. Seriously. It needs doing. 

Did this eventually. It still looks nice, months later!

 

08. Practice photography, both for blogging and in general

Never really got around to this. =(

 

09. Write more original fiction outside of NaNoWriMo.

Didn't really do much of this, either

Sold a few bits on ebay but also got rid of a lot of stuff through a car boot sale

 

11. Use Royal Pavilion & Museums membership card more before it expires!

It expired. Booo. 

 

12. Paint.

Painted a handful of things this year. Not loads, though.

 

13. Finish reading ‘Tired of London, Tired of Life’ and actually do some of the stuff in it. 

Read it. Haven't been to London since. Bum.

 

14. Complete ‘Wreck This Journal’ (I got one for Christmas and its so much fun)

Finished it! :D Might make a post about it eventually.

 

15. Write more ‘personal’ blog posts (like this one!)

Not sure that I succeeded at this one, either...

MOOCing a Mess!

Do you know about MOOCs?
It stands for Massive Open Online Courses, something I only found out about a few weeks about, through my lovely friend Lilia of Horror Shock Lolipop.

She linked me to a couple of places that offer these courses for free: coursera and iversity.

I found lots of interesting courses, but have limited myself to just one for the time being. I picked Design 101 with iversity, which started last week.

Every day, those enrolled receive a video postcard and a letter, set in various parts of the world. On Monday, we are given an idea of what we will do during the week, so we have time to prepare, and there is a quiz (so far, I don't like the quizzes, but that's the only thing I don't like!)
From Tuesday to Friday there is a 'homework' task set, which we should spend no more than 1 hour on.
Saturday is a day for updating our personal notebooks and catching up on homework, whilst on Sunday we get an extra little video to watch.

So far, the homework hasn't been too taxing :)

Homework has involved origami, mask-making, cooking, portraits and paper-cutting!
I particularly had fun with the mask-making one (yes, I made both in an hour! Modelling here with Mum's friend who is awesome and refreshingly silly).

The emails, 'postcards' and letters we receive are fun and interesting. The postcards make use of a lot of cool animation and all reference different aspects of design, music, and things I wouldn't necessarily expect to find in connection to design. There are also some great quotes included along the way.

I decided to enrol for Design 101 (or #design1o1 as it's tagged on all the social media) because design and creativity is something that interests me!
I did a module on design at university, as part of my Computer Studies degree, but struggled with it, along with the majority of my class (a rant best left for another day. Needless to say we passed by the skin of our teeth).

I'm hoping that I'll get more out of this course than the module I did at uni! It's much more hands-on, introduced in bite-sized, interesting chunks, and is visually appealing. The only appealing thing I got from my uni course was the world 'weltanschauung'!

This is distracting me a little from NaNoWriMo, but it's good for my brain to work on something other than writing during November!

Wreck This Journal Update #2

For a while, I ran out of steam on my Wreck This Journal. It languished on a shelf whilst I got on with other things. I've done most of the 'easy' things, and the things I was most inspired to do.
Some pages are works in progress, such as 'a page for positive thoughts'--I'll fill this up over time!

However, I have completed some more pages so here's a little progress report!

I'm pleased with how this page turned out. It's not perfect, but WTJ isn't meant to be. It's supposed to be destructive!
As you can see, I got bored of my neat and tidy method on the right hand page. I like to fill both pages so the left hand page ended up being a bunch of flowers and a leaf that I picked up on a walk.

'Sample various substances found in your home.' This took me longer than it should have done, as substances have always been to hand! My colour themes went out of the window pretty fast.
I actually got a little help from this one--I took my Wreck This Journal with me when I went for a catch up with a neighbour, and she provided some soup and grape juice from her fridge! (Being a creature of creativity, she also provided me with a foot and number sticker for the front cover!)

'Collect the stamps off all your mail'.

Does anyone else get disappointed when post arrives and it doesn't have a traditional stamp on it? So many letters are franked nowadays, so many parcels arrive with a printed, goldish sticker-stamp attached that has been run off the machine at the post office. So rarely do our brown paper packages come tied up with string and stuck with a rainbow of postage stamps!

But I digress. This page took time, too, as stamped post doesn't show up often. I kinda cheated on this one as well, as I turned out a bunch of old postcards and chopped all the stamps from them ;) Technically it's still off my mail, but they're old!

There are still a few dozen pages waiting to be started, finished, or even looked at. Then there's the occasional blank page that I'll fill in as I like, and pages I don't know how to fill--we don't tend to have stickers on our fruit, or a compost bin (both needed for pages...) So I guess I'll have to think around those!

Goals Progress #2

At the beginning of the year, I came up with a list of goals for 2013. The last time I looked at my progress was in March, so it's time for another little review!

A llama, because why not.

01. Make 100 unique necklaces

Done this. However, they're not all for sale!

02. Start up an Etsy store to sell said necklaces!

I set up my Etsy store months ago and recently added new stock!

03. Create some sewn items to sell on etsy, too

There's nothing on there at the moment, but I do have some 'Monstars' to sell and am planning to make more along a theme.

04. Prepare blog posts much further in advance…

Iffy on this one. Weekly posts such as Marvellous Monday and Pinning Inspiration get prepared in advance but a lot of others are still created 'on the fly'. It would be helpful if I tried harder at this one!

05. …but don’t get bogged down with following ‘blogging trends’ (unless they’re interesting to me)

Doing well at this, I think. I don't even know what the current trends are in blogland!

06. Likewise don’t feel pressured to create ‘seasonal’ crafts/posts (Halloween crafts at Easter? Why not!)

I'm managing this one, too. I'll make seasonal crafts if and when I feel like it. Perhaps it means I'll get fewer hits during seasonal times such as Christmas, but at the same time I hope that makes this blog a peaceful getaway from seasonal madness! 

07. Get a hair cut. Seriously. It needs doing. 

Did this earlier in the year. Now it's grown and needs cutting again, but I have an appointment at the hairdresser tomorrow! Hurrah!

08. Practice photography, both for blogging and in general

Not doing any of this, but I'm still addicted to instagram.

09. Write more original fiction outside of NaNoWriMo.

Haven't written anything recently! The creative part of my mind has been fixated on sewing and jewellery-making.

10. Have a big clear out and sell things on ebay.

Did this once, did this twice, ebay is still a huge drag but I'm in the process of yet another clear out so I guess I'll be heading to ebay once again soon!

11. Use Royal Pavilion & Museums membership card more before it expires!

It expired and barely paid for itself. Booo. I love the Royal Pavilion as it's fascinating to walk around, but I didn't renew my membership this year.

12. Paint.

Haven't done much of this lately, either, but I did spend some time splattering a costume with paint yesterday (splattering my feet, arms, and the garden in the process!)

13. Finish reading ‘Tired of London, Tired of Life’ and actually do some of the stuff in it. 

Finished reading ages ago, but haven't been to London to do anything from it yet!

14. Complete ‘Wreck This Journal’ (I got one for Christmas and its so much fun)

It's still in progress! I'm getting down to the 'harder to finish' bits, such as 'Compost this page. Watch it deteriorate.' part. We don't even have a compost bin...

Wreck This Journal Update

Back in March I wrote about the Wreck This Journal that I received as a Christmas present.

It's about time I posted an update on how that's going, right?

Remember how nice and pretty the pages were? After two trips to the shower, inks had run, glue had washed away and pages had wrinkled! Oh, and there were pink stains on it where the colour came out of my hair. :D

This page took me ages. Having looked around the internet, a lot of people picked a word at random and did some fantastic text art. I couldn't think of a word, so I took the instruction, 'Write one word over and over' absolutely literally.
Water damage means my painstakingly-written tiny 'one word' writing got all blurry.

Oddly enough, one page didn't get affected by the water...

Cake Is Marvellous!

Yesterday, I bought a pad of watercolour paper (from Tiger, which is an awesome shop) and today sat down to test it out.
It's glued on all four sides, which makes detaching the pages a bit awkward but on the plus side means no paint getting under the page I'm working on!

Didn't really know what to paint, so I did this:

I don't really know what I'm doing with watercolours, but it makes a change from not knowing what I'm doing with acrylics!

Disaster Day

Do you ever have days that seem to be a complete and total disaster?
I think I'm having one of them.

The first clue was just after lunch, when I was making some no-bake yummies to take with me when I go to volunteer tomorrow (because charity shops and cakes are an excellent combination).

Yummies.

The recipe called for the chocolate to be melted with butter (I used Stork margarine instead) which meant I had to do it on the hob in a glass bowl, over a pan of hot water.
To save time, I boiled water in the kettle first, to pour into the pan. When the kettle was boiled, I lifted it up and managed not only to clobber the top of it on the bottom of the overhead cupboard, but knocked the bowl of the scales flying too! Luckily the bowl was empty, but it made a real clang when it hit the floor!

Anyway, the 'cakes' themselves went well enough, thank goodness.

I went to make another Monstar and managed to sew the arms on the wrong way around...No picture of this, because it's a present for somebody who might read this blog!
...admittedly I rectified the mistake by sewing the legs on backwards too...

Moving on!

This afternoon we heard a loud bang from the back door and Howie (our cat), ran into the kitchen...closely followed by Alfie (another of ours). We could easily guess that Alfie tried to attack Howie through the cat flap...

Alfie has no bothers to give.

...the cat flap which is now in pieces. Alfie clearly does not care (but did know he was in trouble).

I unscrewed the cat flap from the back door, as there were bits of sharp plastic hanging from the flap. Alfie didn't want to pose with it, surprisingly!


As for this evening? This evening, I decided to make soup to take with me tomorrow, too. To be precise, butternut squash and ginger soup. 
I'd read online that using cashew nuts in soup can make it creamy, so I thought I'd try that out! I also had to use a different stock to the one I normally use in soup.

I prepared and boiled up the butternut squash and an onion, and tossed in a load of pre-prepared ginger, the stock, and some herbs for good measure. As the bubbled away and the squash softened, it smelt quite delicious! 

When I first blended it up, it was too thick. I returned some to the pan and added water to the soup remaining in the blender, put the lid back on...and hadn't put the lid on well enough.

Basically I managed to explode soup all over the place. That soup was hot. Boiling hot. Most of what hit me landed on my clothes, but I have a burn on my wrist now. Owie!


To add insult to injury - quite literally - the soup tastes disgusting. The cashews obliterated the taste of the vegetables, and the stock is so disgustingly salty that the soup tastes of nothing more than liquified, oversalted nuts.

And I have a whole jug of the stuff. :(

Procrastinating, Instagram-Style

I'm procrastinating in writing this post. I could be making more jewellery, painting, photographing stuff for future Etsy listings, reading, or doing a whole ton of other things.

Instead, I'm here, because I feel like rambling about recent things.

Yesterday, I finally got around to making some business cards. I only printed 24 (it would have been 32 but the printer rejected the last sheet of card multiple times!) but I think that's enough for now. I will carry some in my bag, as I'm getting better at plugging my wares :)

I picked up this awesome fabric in the village charity shop recently. It's a tad under 2 metres and cost me £1.50. The picture doesn't show all of the black section at the top, but it's the print that really drew me to the fabric!

At the moment, I can't decide what to make out of it. My initial thought was to make a long skirt, because last summer I wore my long refashioned skirt loads.
But now I'm thinking that maybe I should try to make a maxi dress or kaftan instead. Argh, decisions, decisions...

Remember how I wrote recently of my slowly-drying Wreck This Journal? It dried, after around three days against the radiator. I had to keep turning the pages so it dried all the way through!
This is how it looks now. I'm getting to the point where it takes ages to find the right page (especially now they're wrinkled and bent and ripped...) so I added lots of little post-it slips to help me find my way!

Okay, this last picture has a bit of 'eww' value, so I'll hide it behind a handy 'read more'. For the curious, I burst a blood vessel in my eye...

This is from last Friday. Of course, due to it being the Easter weekend, with bank holidays left, right and centre, the doctor's surgery was closed! Instead, I went to the chemist on the Saturday, where the pharmacist recommended some eye drops. The redness has gone down slightly, but I was told that it could take two weeks to clear up! I might go to the doctor if it hasn't cleared up more by the middle of next week. My eye doesn't hurt and I can see just fine, at least!
Absolutely no idea how I did this, but at present the red blob looks a bit like a rabbit. Did the Easter Bunny visit my eye...?!


Well, post done! Let's see if I can be productive now...hahaha!

Goals Progress

At the beginning of the year, I blogged about some of my goals (not resolutions!) for the year.

Now seems as good a time as any to look at how I'm doing so far...

01. Make 100 unique necklaces

I'm up to around #89, including those I posted tutorials for here. (Current favourites are the bottle necklaces and the studded tassel necklace!). Admittedly I started making necklaces in November 2012, so some of those don't technically count, but I've lost track of how many I've made from the start of 2013! 

...once I get to 130, I'll consider the goal complete. I should stop making necklaces for myself because my jewellery board is groaning under the weight of it all!

But we all know that's not going to happen! ;D

 

 

02. Start up an Etsy store to sell said necklaces!

Done! My Etsy shop is also named Unfortunately Oh and I've redesigned the shop header. Part of today was spent changing the keywords for each listing as well. I'm still getting to grips with Etsy, so any tips from seasoned Etsy sellers would be much appreciated.

 

 

03. Create some sewn items to sell on Etsy, too

Done! My store now contains a few 'Monstars'. I'm thinking of starting a custom-made Monstar service, if these ones end up being successful, and have a few others planned.

 

04. Prepare blog posts much further in advance…

In progress! I'm currently in love with the scheduled post function and planning to add another weekly feature to this blog, alongside Marvellous Mondays. How are your finding Marvellous Monday, by the way?

 

05. …but don’t get bogged down with following ‘blogging trends’ (unless they’re interesting to me)

I'm trying hard not to do this. I'm not even sure what current blogging trends are! But I promise that you won't see any ombre, chevrons, or grey x yellow here.  I want to bring something different to the table!

So far, I'm doing well at this. The past two years, I've felt pressurised to create seasonal crafts to bring in the hits, but this year I've done nothing for Easter, yet gained hits on my old easter egg hunt printables. I've had some really nice comments on them so thank you to everyone who took the time to comment!

 

 

We're silly, and decided to make a 'hair donut'

07. Get a hair cut. Seriously. It needs doing.

Done! J'adore my hairdresser. My haircuts aren't cheap but they are well worth the money. I'm one of those lazy people who avoids the hairdresser for months on end; my short hairstyle was almost at my shoulders when I finally went! 

 

 

I also dyed my hair again recently. I was hoping for red but once again the red dye ended up pink. To quote a friend, 

You're destined to be pink. Don't fight it!

So I suppose I'll stick with this for now and hope next time's attempts with a different brand goes red. Failing that, maybe I'll try green!

 

08. Practice photography, both for blogging and in general

Not really doing this. I studied photography at A-Level and had a love-hate relationship with the course, but I do miss the weight of an SLR in my hands. Just wish I had the money for a DSLR and a couple of lenses to play with. As it stands, I'll stick with my point and shoot camera, and - dare I say it - my iPhone.

I think I need to give myself some 'projects' with regards photography. Does anyone have suggestions?

 

09. Write more original fiction outside of NaNoWriMo.

Started this recently! I downloaded a free app called Lift which lets you set a bunch of goals and check in every day when you complete them. One of the goals I chose for myself was 'write for 30 minutes'. I don't do this every day, but so far have managed to write a few short stories, and finish some that I started years ago! I'm hardly writing the next Lord of the Rings but it's great to get the creative juices flowing no matter how ridiculous the end result is.

 

10. Have a big clear out and sell things on ebay.

Done! I'm still not a fan of selling on ebay, but money is nice. I have stuff left over (also stuff that still hasn't been listed!) but it's coming into car boot fair season in my area, so I'm hoping to badger someone into providing the car boot for my unwanted goods to be sold from!

 

11. Use Royal Pavilion & Museums membership card more before it expires!

Still haven't done this. It's terrible! I paid £25 for my membership and have only been to the Royal Pavilion twice! One more time, and it will have paid for itself. Going to the same place multiple times might sound ridiculous, but with the Royal Pavilion there is always something new to notice.

 

12. Paint.

I did some paintings, but haven't done any more since. I want to do more soon!

 

13. Finish reading ‘Tired of London, Tired of Life’ and actually do some of the stuff in it.

I've half-finished this one, in a sense that I've read the book. I've yet to go to London, though!

 

 

14. Complete ‘Wreck This Journal’ (I got one for Christmas and its so much fun)

In progress! Wreck this Journal fell by the wayside for a little while, but over the last few days I've done some more, including the incredibly destructive 'take this book into the shower with you'. I did this three days ago and the book is still drying out!

Wreck This Journal!

One of the presents I received for Christmas 2012 was ‘Wreck This Journal’ by Keri Smith. It’s a fabulous, reader-involved book which, as the title suggests, you destroy. All in the name of creativity!

Completing it is one of my goals for 2013.

So far, it’s been inspiring. The instructions are varied and open to interpretation, even encouraging you to deface the cover (as you can see, I’ve not done that one yet!)

I’m having fun with picking pages at random to complete, and art materials that have been gathering dust in the cupboard for years are finally seeing the light of day!

One of the great things I’ve found about Wreck this Journal is that it’s helping me to lose restraint when being creative: to be careless, to rip and scribble and colour outside the lines. And I’m pretty pleased with some of the stuff I’ve churned out so far!

I would definitely recommend this book.

Paint.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote about some of my goals for the next twelve months.

One of them was simply, ‘Paint’.

For a long time I was apprehensive about sharing my paintings, because I have felt that they ‘aren’t good enough.’

I realised that this is just silly; nobody is expecting me to be the next Van Gogh and I shouldn’t expect myself to be, either!

Also, the more practice I get, the better I should get.

So I decided to share the things I’ve painted. I uploaded them to my old deviantART account (hence the watermarks on these pictures!) but decided to post them here, too.

Stood Up Comedy

This sad little pierrot is a painting I sketched out a few years ago but never had the motivation to paint. Originally I drew something along the same lines on paper, scanned it and coloured the picture in Photoshop Elements—my first ever attempt at using a graphics tablet!

So I thought it was about time I painted the poor abandoned fool. Anyone want to give him some love? :)

Wise Man

I painted the ‘wise man’ last year; it was the first painting I’d done for a few years! I used to paint a lot of portrait-style images though these were primarily female. This time I thought I’d go for a male character!

A couple of these paintings play around with some ideas about siren/mermaids and I’ll probably paint more involving those to explore the ideas more.

Flaming Os

‘Flaming Os’ is an old painting from 2004. I’m posting it here because it amuses me!

I’m hoping to maintain my level of motivation when it comes to painting! I’d like to try out some different styles and maybe different types of paint, too (normally I use acrylic but I have some watercolours that I’d like to get to grips with!)

So there we go. Goal #12 is under way!

Pepsi or Coke: Coke, at a push, though I don't tend to drink fizzy drinks (they give me indigestion!)

Dog or Cat: Cat. I've grown up around cats and can't imagine not having any!

Movie or Book: Book. You can read a book in a lot more places than you can watch a movie!

Twitter or Facebook: Twitter wins this one because it annoys me less :)

Book or E~reader: Book. You can't beat the smell and feel of paper (especially with old books!)

Tea or Coffee: Tea! I can't stand coffee (though coffee chocolate/cake/etc is good)

Ketchup or Brown Sauce: Ketchup. It's good with a bacon butty!

Sweet or Savoury: Savoury, for now. I've been on a savoury kick lately.

Red or White: Red!

Bath or Shower: Shower. It's quicker and uses less water and cleaning hair dye out of the shower tray is much easier than trying to clean it out of a bath!

Pub or Wine Bar: Pub, especially if it's a particularly quirky or old-fashioned one (there is a pub next to the church in Seaford, Sussex, which has meerkats in the wall!)

PJ’s or Nekkid: PJs, especially the sort that have a shirt-like top. Super comfortable!

Mickey Mouse or Danger Mouse: Danger Mouse! He's the greatest, he's fantastic.

IPod or Walkman: iPod. I can put lots of songs on one tiny device and therefore have to lug less things on trips with me! :D

Chocolate or Vanilla: Chocolate. Mmm...

Frank Sinatra or Sam Cooke: Frank Sinatra because he's the only one I've heard of...

Original or Improved: Original. As they say, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

Glass or Plastic: Glass. It's more widely recyclable!

Pancakes or Waffles: Pancakes. With sugar and lemon.

Home or Away: Home. I love to travel and see different places and different countries, but nothing beats home!

Goals for the Year Ahead

I have a confession to make.

I don’t make New Year resolutions.

Many years ago, I made a resolution to not make any more resolutions--I always broke them by the middle of January, anyway.

Or I set myself resolutions that were unachievable or impossible, such as ‘Get brace off by September’. (My adventure into orthodontics lasted around six years!)

I found that by setting myself resolutions, I was putting pressure on myself to attain them, even if they were impossible. And when I didn’t succeed?

I felt like a failure.

(And believe me, I am an expert in feeling like a failure.)

For a long time, I’ve not thought of making any changes, come the New Year. Sure, I’ve considered things such as, ‘I must stop eating so much junk food’ or ‘I must see my friends more often this year.’ But I’ve never resolved nor challenged myself to do those things.

  

Again, it all amounts to putting pressure on myself.

 

This year, I’ve decided to stop being so lazy and avoidant.

This is a combination of a to-do list and a wish list: things I would like to achieve or do.

 Unlike resolutions, I am not committing to do everything.

I am committing to attempt these things.

Undoubtedly, I will change my mind about some goals!

I lose motivation sometimes. Or I’ll look further into something, and decide it’s not for me.

Or I’ll just plain lose interest. I tried to do 101/1001 once, and about a year in realised I wasn’t interested in half the things I had listed!
