Pinning Inspiration #22

Last week's Pinning Inspiration was about details. This week I'm looking at the opposite end of the scale: simplicity.

To me, simplicity does not mean 'complete lack of detail'. Simplicity is about finding the naturally occuring details, lines and imperfection (though 'perfection' is a matter of taste).

Simplicity is taking a 'less is more' approach: a few twigs in a lopsided vase or single wildflowers in old glass bottles.

It is when the eye is drawn to that which occurs naturally: the drape of unembellished fabric, or the graceful bend of a black-painted handrail in a white stairwell.

Simplicity can be found in new and old alike, whether it is in the slowly-formed chips, scratches and patina on a set of bowls or the steady flow of smoke rising from a joss stick.

It can be about natural colours, smooth flowing lines...

Or gently-mottled pottery and unironed sheets.

Simplicity is calm, inviting and uncomplicated.

What does simplicity mean to you?

  1. Ooh, love your examples. Everything really. I am really drawn to simplicity (perhaps mostly from a cleaning perspective, ha ha).
